Our Year Begins!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back! We have a fun year ahead and I am looking forward to getting to know all of my students better. I have a few classroom announcements:

Communication:
Mondays are my late day at school so I will be available to chat if you have any questions or concerns. I will continue to post pictures on the blog, as well as updated curriculum, class schedule, and any important dates/events. The blog website is http://roadrunnersclass.blogspot.com. My email address is msscuderi@classacademy.com. Please feel free to send me an email anytime. We have parent teacher conferences on Friday, October 19th. There will not be any school that day.
Homework:
Homework will go home on Fridays. I don’t want the Roadrunners to get overwhelmed by doing all of their homework in one or two days. “Small bites” will be more effective. If homework is labeled “Monday”, that means to do it Monday night and we will check it the following day in class. I will be running their homework table Monday-Thursday from 2:30-3:00. That allows them a good amount of time to get most of it completed and receive assistance if they have any questions.
Reading:
The Roadrunners will not receive a reading book for homework for at least the first half of the year. We are working out of a new reading program and will be using the reading books in class. They will have reading comprehension homework and sometimes supplementary books for reading at home. I encourage you to read with them every night for 20 minutes. You could read together, taking turns, or they can read to you. Just be sure they are reading at their comprehension level, not just word accuracy. They need to be able to understand what they are reading.
I will be giving them SSR chapter books for them to read during class when they are completed with their work or during SSR time.
Kindness:
Our first reading unit is on ‘Kindness’. We have been working hard in our classroom to build a community where everyone feels safe and included. We have something we call “kindness buckets” where the children can put in compliments or notes of thanks to another student. In our room we also have an interactive kindness bulletin board that we will be using during reading class and throughout the day.
Spelling:
There will be spelling tests this year! The list goes home in the homework folders and the tests will be on Fridays. There are spelling activities in the homework folders as well as some suggestions on how to practice at home for the tests.

I am looking forward to a great year with you and your student!

Your Teacher,
Ms Scuderi
